Kawa

h 132 x w 183 cm (52” x 72”)
Linen, wool, cotton, raffia
Tapestry weaving, extra wefts over the surface

My Japanese ancestors lived in a remote area of Japan, Wakayama-ken, which was famous for the timber trade. They were part of the industry and would have transported logs by river. I celebrate their energy as well as that of the river. Kawa is the Japanese word for river, whose flow also suggests the passage of time and the succession of generations.
