The Journeyman Stonemason His Mark

h 109 x w 145 cm (43” x 57”)
wool, linen, silk, cotton
tapestry weaving, knotting

Based on a block of stone which shows the marks of the mason’s chisel, this tapestry is a commemoration of my great-great-grandfather, a journeyman stonemason in Scotland. The only marks he would have left after his death are anonymous ones, the functional, repetitive marks of the humble mason, similar to those I have recorded. His designation as ‘journeyman’ meant that he never achieved the status of master craftsman, but he also had to ‘journey’ to Oban, Stornoway and Glasgow to get work.
