The painted and worn steps that lead down to a damp basement near my home in Edinburgh are the basis of this tapestry. It is dedicated to my great-great-great-grandmother, Jane (or Jean) Wallace, who died in the poorhouse in Edinburgh. None of the buildings she lived in still stands, so this represents the sort of home she might have lived in. Her name and dates are included as if she were an important historical figure.
